Manners are a way of doing something. It is our habits, behaviour, etiquette or our outward way of behaving towards others. Islam places a very heavy emphasis on good manners. Dealing with others in good manners means to put them at ease the way Islam teaches us to. It is not only an important part of our religion but also makes our social life much better.
It is so important that Prophet PBUH himself always displayed the best manners in all situations throughout his blessed life. No one was better than him in manners and Allah SWT confirms it in the Holy Quran: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” The Prophet PBUH stated he was sent to perfect the manners of the people, as he mentioned in a hadeeth “I have been sent only for the purpose of perfecting good morals.” (Bukhari). One can not be a true Muslim if one performs all kinds of worships, i.e. prayer, fast, zakah, hajj, umrah, jihad etc. in the best ways but neglects good manners.
It is therefore very important that you employ good manners when you are on your Hajj Trip or Umrah Trip.
Good manners consist of respecting human rights, spreading words of peace and love, reviving broken relationships, working and praying for humanity and other Muslims, advising and calling each other to do good and to stop wisely which is evil. Good manners are about respecting parents, teachers, elders, neighbors and showing love and compassion to the young ones. Visiting the sick and abstaining from evils such as backbiting and slandering. Allah loves those who possess these great qualities.
Many Ulema have mentioned that manners are more important than the regular physical types of worship (prayers, charity, fasting or even Hajj). They argue that all ritual forms of worship are teaching us how to obtain good manners and they bring several verses of the Holy Quran and ahadeeth in support of their argument as below:
PRAYERS:
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلاَةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنْكَرِ “And establish regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds” (29:45)
The manner stressed here is to avoid shameful and unjust deeds. The purpose of Salah described is to learn to avoid these evils.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاَتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُّعْرِضُونَ “The believers must (eventually) win through, Those who humble themselves in their prayers, Who avoid vain talk.” (23:1-3)
Here we are advised to be humble and to abstain from vain talk in our daily life.
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلاَتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَآءُونَ وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ “So woe to those who pray, (But) who are heedless of their prayer, Those who make show off (of their deeds), And withhold (simple) assistance.” (107:4-7)
This verse of the Holy Quran warns that one may be good at ritual prayers but still condemns if one is guilty of show off, and does not help who may need some assistance.
CHARITY:
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا “Take, (O, Muhammad), from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke (Allah ‘s blessings) upon them ” (9:103)
One may be rich, and there may contamination of income from unethical practices. The verse above reminds us we should keep our means of income pure and clean, and that charity helps purify any contamination.
PILGRIMAGE (Hajj):
If any one undertakes that duty therein, Let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do, (be sure) God knoweth it.” (2:197)
Hajj is one of the greatest worships in Islam, and whilst on it, the verse reminds us to avoid obscenity, wickedness and wrangling.
FASTING:
A hadith in Sahih Muslim reads, “When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting.’ ” (Muslim, 2563)
DEALING WITH OTHERS:
وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَىٰ ٱلأَرْضِ هَوْناً وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الجَاهِلُونَ قَالُواْ سَلاَماً “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace (25:63)
